Great War (GW) is a Week-Long event that usually occurs once a Month. In order to participate in the GW, you must have a Team of 6-20 units prepared as well as 1 Great War Ticket to enter the battle. It is strongly advised to make 3 Teams of 6 units (18 total) as each team can only be used ONCE and will recover it's fighting strength AFTER 2 BATTLES. This allows you to use up all of your tickets where a player with 2 teams will only be able to use 2 tickets as his first team will require another battle to go back into the fight.
You are randomly placed in a Kingdom, but your grouping (players you can visibly see in the rankings) will be of similar age to your own account, or older. The grouping of players is usually based on : # of Participated GW's, # of ranking you were in the last few GW's, and overall GW Points accumulated in your account's history. This can be manipulated slightly by NOT PARTICIPATING IN GW. This however can take several months before you see a drop in difficulty of enemy players.
Great War Tickets[]
Great War Tickets are limited and used to participate in the GW itself. Each player is given 10 Tickets per day at 5:00 AM JST. You can obtain a maximum of 80 tickets throughout the entirety of the GW event. They disappear and are lost forever when the GW ends, meaning you cannot hoard them into the next GW.

OLD GREAT WAR TICKET ACQUISITIONS.
In previous Great Wars, the only way one could acquire Great War Tickets was by using the first 10 tickets given to them, then picking up the extra tickets via Missions that required you to use the original 10 tickets. [Kobald Ashigaru] was a enemy unit that could appear in event stages that had a very slight chance of spawning, and giving you an extra GW Ticket or dropping itself.
Click to show former/original ticket acquisition methods
Also, in the limited tab of the missions (Home > Mission > Time Limited) there are 2 types of missions the player can accomplish, the hunting missions and the waring missions (see table below). Also, there is a special period of time where an extra mission appears that gives you extra tickets, we call that period of time the Final Rush Hours, the mission appears only on last day.

IMPORTANT!!!
If you don't finish or redeem the missions, you lose those tickets forever!!! Also, you can't hoard tickets from one GW to the next, unused tickets disappear at the end of the GW!!!
UPDATE!Since 25th Great War (24th May 2018), Great War Tickets can be dropped from Limited Time Event Stages by defeating an enemy called Kobold Ashigaru. Because of this, the amount of tickets that can be acquired practically limitless.
Army Setups/Formations[]
To fully participate in a GW you need a minimum of 3 armies. However, there is a catch, once you send out an army, it has 2 battles of cool down before it can be used again or you need to wait until the day resets. That's why you need 3 armies, that's the minimum required so that you can spend all your tickets and fight the maximum amount of battles as shown here:
Army 1 battles -> Army 2 battles -> Army 3 battles (resetting Army 1’s cool down) -> Army 1 battles -> etc.
Each army consist at least 6 units and maximum allowed is 20 units. So, for setting up 5 armies you need a minimum of 30 units and maximum 100 units. Moreover, you have to set up one of those 5 armies as your flag army (the default is the 1st army), which is the army that other users will ALWAYS fight against.
In order to set up an army, you need to go to the edit troops tab (Home > GW Icon > Edit Troops). There you must press the edit button. Firstly, you must choose a formation by clicking on the Formation Selection button. You can choose one of the following:

The bonus stats acquired from formation chosen also affect player stats. For example when you used mainly Attack oriented skill then it's better to use formation that boost ATK/DEX stats, like Golden Arrow or Windmill.
Threat Level[]
Threat Level was introduced at version 3.0.7. Threat level indicate how strong a team composition is. It's represented by star symbol in player profile, maximum is 4 stars. The stronger the units in the team composition, the higher the threat level. It's unconfirmed whether it's determined by units rarity or units stats. The Player's own threat level can be shown at GW unit composition, but only for the leading team.
Tips[]
When you build a team, build one that will last long enough for YOU to kill the enemy team. All Passives that work for the MC -DO NOT WORK FOR YOU IN GREAT WAR- because you are no longer the objective of the game mode! The next tip might sound contradictory, but... Passives that affect ALLIES -DO NOT AFFECT YOUR UNITS IN THE GREAT WAR- BUT, -THEY WILL AFFECT THE ABILITIES THAT YOU BRING INTO THE GREAT WAR.-
Click for Updated Tips
It is recommended to have at least ONE TEAM meant to deal with extremely hard/challenging 4.0 star enemy leader teams. The other two can be defensive, but still strong enough to take at least a 3.5 star teams without a struggle. Having a team of 3 like so can get you the gist of how GW is meant to be played. Later on, you can eventually swap out units from your team 2&3 to make it stronger, taking on other 4.0 star teams.
Always put equipment on your units. Level them up to their max, it being 50/75/100 at that moment. Anything that keeps them alive is viable.
How does one get more points in the Great War?
Primarily by attacking higher difficulty enemy teams, indicated by the star level before you initiate the attack. Here's how it's calculated:
4 Star Difficulty
290 at 99 seconds. -1 point every second after 97 seconds.
Highest Points Obtainable : 351.
3.5 Star Difficulty
280 at 99 seconds. -1 point every second after 97 seconds.

Kingdoms[]
Once the GW starts you will be placed in one of the 5 following kingdoms:
Estgrand Beast Kingdom
Atarakua Demon Empire
Lumen Holy Kingdom
Kirika Empire
Sternveld Kingdom
This only affects two aspects of the GW. First, you can't attack players from the same Kingdom. Second, Kingdoms will compete for total points won in the GW. Depending on the rank of the Kingdom, players within them will receive a set amount of medals for the Kingdom's Rank.
Guide: Skill, item, and MC Evolution[]
Disclaimer[]
Please note that the following is a suggestion aimed at beginners with few resources but can be used as merely a guide for older players who have greater and better resources including equipment, MC evolutions, units, etc. It is to be used on a case by case basis to determine its usefulness and usability to each individual person. Re:Monster Fandom does not take responsibility for lost points, matches or battles.
Expand Guide
What makes the GW special apart from the armies, is that your Main Character (MC) can use his skills while not appearing in the battle, thus, you don't need to split skills and items on boosting the MC survivability (see tip section on setting up your armies). Thus you can usually take one of 2 types that make the most impact on the battlefield: Magical abilities and passives, or Physical abilities and passives. And also, it's strongly recommended to leave a separate skill page for the GW alone.
DPS[]
Setting your skills and Evolution+Equipment to be a DPS styled GW player is very common and is actually promoted to achieve this. You will naturally just be using your abilities to annihilate the enemy team within seconds of starting the Great War. Your main focus is either the Back-Line or Most Threatening/Annoying Unit. You will focus on the Most Threatening/Annoying enemy unit as they will greatly reduce one of the following; your unit's offensive capabilities(getting stunned or stuck attacking the unit and never killing it), your unit's life(getting instantly 1 shot), or just being overall annoying to kill. If there is no threat, you will focus the Back-Line as it will take time for your units to shred through the Front-Line.
MC Evolution[]
Some player might not know this, but the MC is able to switch between unlocked evolution variants at a low cost of food and coins (14,000 gold and 10,000 food), while retaining that specific variant level. Its virtually free to switch between variants, so take advantage of it.
What we are looking for in a DPS focused MC are 3 things:
High Mana Pool (MP)
High dexterity (Reduces your chance of missing)
High offensive stat (Attack or Magic as explained)
Taking that into consideration there are 2 variants that excel at this role:
Void Spirit Mage (Magical DPS)
Imperial Blood Raider (Physical DPS)
Spell Lord (Magical DPS)
Ice Blood True Vampire (Physical DPS)
With the introduction of the SSR rarity MC evolution, it's recommended to use SR or higher evolutions. Higher rarity means more stats, moreover they have special equipments that boost their stats further. But the evolutions need special requirement to unlock, via the Royal Capital Shop, which will cost roughly 200 Hunter's Proof for 1 SR MC Evolution. 150 for the Keys and 50 for the Meat. Void Spirit Mage is the exception, only needing the Keys to unlock it.
Items[]
Looking into what items to use is even easier, use one that raises both your offensive stat and dex. It is strongly discouraged to use DEX reducing items as it will decrease the chance of actually hitting the enemy with your skills. Currently the best items for this role are :

It is suggested to also bring in a Heal-Block ability to have a counter against [Revive] Units as they will stay alive for much longer than needed. Heal-Block will prevent them from reviving, countering their revive altogether. This is especially needed when fighting teams that have a LE++ [Goddesses of Fates] or [Scales of Judgement Rou]
Support[]
This part has been deleted for being obsolete and actually causing you to lose more points as you are not actively doing damage. If you do this, you are guaranteeing yourself to lose points.
Battle[]
You've made your armies and prepared your skills. Now, if you have tickets, you can select one of the four enemy kingdoms to attack. There you can select between 6 enemy players, in total you can choose 1 player out of 24 since there are 4 kingdoms. Once you chose the player you want to fight, select your masterfully crafted skill page and enter battle. Each battle has time limit of 99 seconds.
The first thing you will see here is that an elemental roulette wheel starts spinning, and ends up selecting 1 element to “bless”, the blessing only affect YOUR units. Blessing will give unit 100 HP, 50 ATK/MAG/DEF, and 20 all round elemental resistance buff IF your unit have the same blessing color of the element (you can see it in your units GW tab or by changing the display anywhere your units are listed).
When battle starts, you have no control of your army, however, you should be spamming your skills like a madman while using them strategically. Kill units that bring the biggest, or most immediate threat to your front-line or the entire group itself.
There are two win condition for great war battle:
1. Annihilate all of the opposing enemy units
2. Your remaining units total HP higher than opponent's remaining units total HP. You can determine this easily by viewing a bar at the bottom of battle screen. Green for your units and Red for enemy's.
At the end of the battle you are provided with a score along with a timer showing how much time you have left over (in seconds) and a good amount of Mercenary Group EXP (for player level, not units). The most important aspect here are the points gained. You can lose and still get 10 points for participating. If you win, it will be mathematically calculated based on : Ability damage done, left over HP of your entire team, and lastly- the time you finished at.
How do you achieve max points? The difficulty star level of the enemy team. This is the single, most important thing that dictates your points and who is first. You can gain up to 290 points for attacking a 4 STAR ENEMY... if you cleared it in under 2 seconds:

If your units take a moderate amount of damage, or more than 2-3 die, you lose even more points.
Another important thing to account for points is Ability Points. This however is easily achieved as you can only get sub 97 seconds by using many abilities. (Only takes ~1 Offensive skill to hit a group of enemies to grant full points)
Rewards[]
There are 3 main rewards for participating in GW: Player EXP, Medals, and Titles.
Player experience With an average of 100 experience per successful battle, with 80 battles you end up leveling several times per GW until you start hitting around level 70. It's a great boost for lower level players.
Medals Next are the medals, medals are the currency used to buy things at the Great War Shop, which includes Equipments, Items, and Units. Medals are awarded after GW ends. Medals will not expired and able to be carried over to the next GW. Medals won depends on several factors:

Taking all of this into account, you want to place as high as possible in the Leaderboard. For this, you have to maximize the amount of points you win (see battle and all the preparations) and reduce the amount of points your competitors get. How do you ask? By making the strongest flag army possible. The reason why it's recommended to built a defensive army is that taking into account once your flag army fights another player they will have to fight against an enemy MC, victory is often not an option, but you can stall for time, reducing a huge amount of points earned. Only when your army is vastly more powerful than the opponents you can reduce their earnings via killed units.
Great War Shop[]
You remember that medals are the GW alternate currency? Well, here is where you spend them. You can access the shop in the shop tab of the GW (Home > GW Icon > Shop). Thankfully you can access the GW shop even when the GW ends, but some items have limited quantities per player, and you will need to wait till next GW.
Here you can buy 3 types of thing (one for each shop tab): Units, Equipment, and Materials.
